NODE Forum For Digital Arts, TADAEX – Tehran Annual Digital Arts Exhibition and the Goethe Institute invite Iranian and German media artists to apply for artistic residencies in Frankfurt, Germany and Tehran, Iran.

Goal of the TADAEX/NODE Exchange Program is to establish an exchange between the media arts scenes in Iran and Germany, and to connect the communities that have emerged around each festival.

We will invite these two artist to take part in in two residencies prior to the respective festivals. Both residency periods will last 3 weeks in which both artists will be present in the host cities Tehran (2016) and Frankfurt/Main (2017), get to know the local digital arts scene and take part in the festival activities. The artists are encouraged to share their working experience and collaborate on projects that will be presented in the context of TADAEX and NODE17.

2016 – Residency at TADAEX, Tehran

Iran Schedule: 07.-30. September / TADAEX 22.-30. September 2016

You will live and work for two weeks at Kooshk Residency Space in Tehran and be part of TADAEX. During your stay, you will collaborate on the creation of an artwork, which will be presented to a local and international audience at TADAEX. Travel, accommodation and an artist fee will be provided by the hosting institutions. Intensive collaboration and on-site research are strongly encouraged.

2017 – Residency at NODE Forum for Digital Arts, Frankfurt

Germany Schedule: NODE17 Summer 2017! Precise dates will be announced soon!

Together, you will work at the production and exhibition venue basis Frankfurt e.v. and be part of NODE17 Forum for Digital Arts. You are encouraged to continue the collaboration that has been initiated in advance to TADAEX and get the opportunity to show the resulting work to a local and international audience at the festival. Travel, accommodation and an artist fee will be provided by the hosting institutions.

Your Profile

We are looking for emerging artists who are using, deconstructing or reflecting digital tools, media or hardware in creative or critical ways. There are no restrictions in terms of media (Video, Audio, Performance, Software, …). You should be curious about  the festivals (NODE / TADAEX) and their respective profiles. A vivid interest in the challenges and opportunities of digitization should be apparent in your work approach. Successful applicants must be present at both festivals. Female applicants are strongly encouraged!

Application

The application for the joint TADAEX 2016 and NODE17 exchange program must be submitted until 30.06.2016. Your application should include:

1. MOTIVATION (3.000 characters max.)

• Your personal interest in the residency,
• your expectation regarding the collaboration with your partner,
• an idea for a project you would like to work on (a short outline will do),
• and a short statement on how you relate your work to the context of TADAEX/NODE.

2. Portfolio

A PDF, 1–3 works, 6 pages max., including descriptions of the works and links if the work contains media such as sound, video, movement etc. in the PDF.

In a combined 9th and 10th edition of NODE+CODE, we will be discussing the role of the human body in new music performances. In two lecture concerts, STEIM researcher and musician Andi Otto (aka Springintgut) and the UdK Berlin based research group 3DMIN (»Design, Development and Dissemination of New Musical Instruments«) will present their findings and new musical instruments. In a conversation with NODE15 curators Jeanne Charlotte Vogt and Alexandra Waligorski, they will be investigating the corporeality of the instrumental. Which significance do instruments have for musicians themselves and the audience in times of the digital creation of sound? Do we still have to consider virtuosity as a category to evaluate the relationship between a musician and his/her instrument?

BIOs:

Andi Otto

Andi Otto is a composer and performer of electronic music based in Hamburg, Germany. He records his music as “Springintgut”. He has released four albums as well as various singles, collaborations and remixes on international labels.
On stage, he plays a unique sensor-extended cello bow which he has developed in collaboration with STEIM in Amsterdam. This instrumental system which he calls Fello allows for gestural performance of the electronically processed sounds of the amplified cello. Andi Otto regularly composes for theatre and dance performances in which he also appears as a performer. His work has taken him around the world, most recently to India (collaboration with MD Pallavi), Nigeria and Japan.
Andi Otto is also one of the founders of the Pingipung label and as a DJ he hosts a regular night at Hamburg’s Golden Pudel Club. He is a member of the Flinntheater Collective from Berlin.

3DMIN – PushPull-team

Amelie Hinrichsen is a Research Associate in the Einstein research project 3DMIN (Design, Development and Dissemination of New Musical Instruments) at the Berlin University of the Arts. After accomplishing an apprenticeship as a carpenter she completed her studies in Product Design at the Berlin University of the Arts in 2012. With her final project she won the DMY Young Talents Jury Award in 2013. After working as a freelancer for Friedrich von Borries she joined the 3dmin Team in 2013. Amelies work ranges from film over product- to interface design. It reflects her interest in combining theoretical research with a practical approach, always physicalness and personal experience in focus. Currently she is working on her dissertation dealing with „Attitude and Posture – Performing Life with electronic musical instruments“.

Dominik Hildebrand Marques Lopes has a degree in audio and video engineering from the Institute for Music and Media Düsseldorf. Furthermore he studied Arts and Media at the University of the Arts (UdK) Berlin, focusing on multichannel sound installations, improvised electronic music, building kinetic/cybernetic (sound-)objects, musical recording, and live-coding. He also holds a “Meisterschüler” (distinguished graduate) degree in Arts and Media. Currently he is working as a Research Associate in the Einstein research project 3DMIN (Design, Development and Dissemination of New Musical Instruments) at the Berlin University of the Arts. He is also lecturer at University of the Arts Bremen (Digital Media).As a computer musician, his main focus is on developing and performing with physical musical interfaces whose constraints and functionality are chosen to exhibit unique behaviour (or life of their own) arguably equally rich as many acoustic instruments. This approach leads to very direct bodily control of computational processes which hopefully can also be experienced as such by the audience. Dominik is a member of “Trio Brachiale”, “Republic111”, and the “Society for Nontrivial Pursuits”.

Since the beginning of 2014, Till Bovermann is a post-doctoral researcher at 3DMIN (Design, Development and Dissemination of New Musical Instruments), an Einstein research project between the Berlin University of the Arts and the Technical University Berlin. From 2010 to 2013, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher on tangible and auditory interaction at Media Lab Helsinki, School of Art, Design and Architecture, Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland. He completed his PhD in Computer science in the natural sciences on Tangible Auditory Interfaces at the Ambient Inteligence Group of Bielefeld University, Germany. Till taught at various international institutions, among others the Institute For Music And Media of the University of Music, Duesseldorf; the Department of Media of Aalto University, Finland, and the Institute for Time-based media, UdK Berlin. His art works are mostly concerned with the relations of art and science, noise and harmony, nature and artificiality. Alongside his academic and artistic work, he also develops software in and for SuperCollider.

PERFORMING WITH COMPUTER VISION
NODE+CODE #7 – Max Dovey

In the aftermath of NODE15, we continue our conversation about the role of the body in the context of technology. In discussion with artist Max Dovey, we will look into which body image is being used for classification in current image recognition technologies, their agency in the formation of ideas on the human body and how to perform with them.

Max Dovey [UK] is 28.3% man, 14.1% artist and 8.4% successful. His performances confront how computers, software and data affect the human condition. Specifically he is interested in how the meritocracy of neo-liberal ideology is embedded in technology and digital culture. He holds a BA Hons in Fine Art: Time Based Media and a MA (MDes) in Media Design from Piet Zwart Institute. His research is in liveness and real-time computation in performance and theatre. He works as a producer and creative technologist for live events and theatre in both The Netherlands and U.K.

We are happy to be able to confirm the participation of Max Dovey, Andi Otto (Springintgut) and 3DMIN for the next NODE+CODE editions.

We will be getting back to the NODE15 research topic on the informed body and, talk about techniques of disguise in times of digital surveillance and the relation between technology and the body in music making. The artists will perform and give insights into their practice.

In its 4th rendition, the festival NODE15 Forum for Digital Arts was dedicated to the leitmotif „Wrapped in Code – The future of the informed body“. For one week, we investigated the melding of the human body with technology and took up the current debate regarding its effect on our social interactions, body and society.

NODE15 has hosted over 50 coding workshops and turned Naxoshalle into a forum for practitioners, for experimenting with digital technologies, and exchanging know-how and skills. With a series of lectures, concerts, performances, and an exhibition, the Mousonturm became the stage for drafts of the future of the informed body.

A Talk with the artist and new media hacker Antoni Rayzhekov about biometric sonification, motion tracking and digital scenography

Antoni: “I want to share my experience and findings in exploring different strategies of sonification of biometric sensory data, motion tracking and audience participation in relation to digital scenography in contemporary performance context. How using cutting edge technology impacts and extends contemporary performance arts today?”

Antoni Rayzhekov is a Bulgarian theater maker, composer and new media hacker – based in Vienna, Austria. He studied theater directing and acting at the Academy for Theater and Film Arts “Krastyo Sarafov” – Sofia and jazz music improvisation – at the Vienna Konservatorium. He worked as a consultant in informational technologies for United Nations in Vienna and in the period 2008 – 2013 he established together with Emanuel Andel the vienna-based new media label THIS.PLAY – focused on interaction design. Currently he is a guest lecturer in Interactive media at the University for Applied Science – St. Pölten, Austria and independent artist.

Antoni: “My work is focused on exploring synergies between generative music, contemporary performance and participatory art by designing reactive audio visual platforms that amplify different aspects of the performer and the performance itself as an attempt to communicate the invisible.”

It’s officially announced: the fourth edition of NODE Forum for Digital Arts will take place in Frankfurt from April 27th – May 3rd, 2015.

With the leitmotif “Wrapped in Code – The Future of the Informed Body” we will open our doors for a week full of intensive workshops, profound face-to-face exchange and critical debates. This year, we will focus our official program on the changing relationship between the human body and technology. With an exhibition and talks we want to reflect on how technology is entering and enhancing the body. We want to discuss the role of the body in processes of perception, for the most basic and complex, rational and emotional moments of interaction.

And this year, we are trying out something new: With a crowdfunding campaign we want to especially support and communicate those parts of the program that are opening the field for dialog between the coding community, scientists, artists and, more intensively than ever, the public. Lectures, performances, and an exhibition will serve as a platform for this.

Due to our strong connection to the city of Frankfurt, we have a special interest in the critical exchange with the local public. With our two neighboring locations in Frankfurt (Mousonturm and Naxoshalle), we have found partners who allow for a direct communication with a diverse audience. The Aventis Foundation is a local cultural foundation that has supported our venture by curating our crowdfunding campaign and eventually supporting it financially.

NODE/TADAEX Residency

We are happy to announce the selected participants of the new established exchange program. Georg Scherling (DE)  has been selected to stay in Iran (prior to Tehran Annual Digital Art Exhibition (TADAEX), 2014) and Amir Bastan (IR)  has been selected to stay in Germany (Prior and during  to NODE15 – Forum for Digital Arts, 2015).

Both artists will work together on a new project and present their work on each of the festivals. We will inform you here about their work,

Amir Bastan

Georg Scherlin

Georg Scherlin is a visual artist based in Berlin. His work is based on translation and repetition. In his artistic practice, he observes everyday situations, social conventions of people and places and codes of communication. Through a diverse range of tools he re-assembles his notes and recordings into videos, sculptures and interactive installations. His work is playing with the idea of a narrative, creating moments that are located somewhere between fiction and reality. He received his master’ s degree in MultiMediaArt from the University of applied science in Salzburg, Austria. Georg is founding member of  kont.txt, an artists collective artist collective for vj–ing and interactive installations in galleries, clubs and festivals around Europe.

About the program

Aim of the TADAEX/NODE Residency Program is to establish an exchange between the media arts scenes in Iran and Germany, and to connect the communities that have emerged around each festival. Both residency periods will last 2 weeks and lead into the respective festival. The artists will be invited to both festivals, and are encouraged to collaborate.

TADAEX – Teheran Annual Digital Arts Exhibition, Tehran, Iran

Tehran Annual Digital Art Exhibition (TADAEX) was founded in december 2011 to open a new window toward digital art in Iran and to create a serious and independent atmosphere for the enthusiasts and researchers of this field.

NODE – Forum for Digital Arts, Frankfurt, Germany

NODE emerged from the initiative of users and  developers of the graphical software tookit vvvv.  The biannual festival NODE – Forum for Digital Arts gathers designers, creative coders, digital artists and creatives of the digital media scene since 2008.  NODE aims to foster a critical reflection within scene. The forum is supporting the creation of an innovative and responsible movement by encouraging new collaboration, interdisciplinary exchange and open knowledge sharing. The main goal of the forum is to empower individuals by encouraging them to experiment, prototype, and develop new things, to ask new questions and to provide answers.
